Privacy

Privacy.

The short version: almost nothing. The longer version is below.

What this site collects

The Backstop is a static site hosted on Cloudflare Pages. It does not run its own tracking, set its own cookies, or maintain its own user accounts. When you browse pages, Cloudflare logs basic request data (IP, request URL, user agent) for an automatic 24-hour security window, the same way every reachable site on the internet does. We do not look at it. We do not store it long-term. We do not link it to anything else.

What the assessment collects

The Start Here assessment stores your answers and your recommended level in your browser only, using localStorage. Nothing is sent to a server. We cannot read it, and neither can anyone else. If you clear your browser data or use a different device, the result is gone.

The same is true for the checklists. When you tick items off, your progress is saved locally and only locally.

What the newsletter collects

If you subscribe to the newsletter, your email address goes to Beehiiv, the service that hosts our mailing list. Beehiiv stores your email, the date you subscribed, and the page you subscribed from (so we know whether people are coming in through guides, checklists, or the homepage). Beehiiv has its own privacy policy — it's worth reading if you care.

We do not sell, rent, or hand off your email address. We do not run paid lookalike-audience campaigns against our list. The only people who see the list are the ones who write the newsletter — and right now, that's me.

You can unsubscribe with one click at the bottom of any email. We do not require a reason, and there is no follow-up.

What we don't have

No Facebook pixel. No Google Analytics. No advertising trackers of any kind. The site embeds Beehiiv's subscribe form, and that's the only third-party script that runs in your browser.

If we add analytics in the future, we will use a privacy-respecting tool (Plausible, Fathom, or Cloudflare Web Analytics) that does not set cookies and does not track individual users. If that ever changes, this page will say so.

Questions or corrections

If you want to know what we have on you, want it deleted, or think this policy is missing something — email hello@thebackstop.co. We aim to respond within a week.
